Maybe Martin Luther was suffering some sort of lead poisoning or insomnia when he wrote this..?? I'm not familiar with most of his writings, but this sounds like a madman, on the one hand speaking out against legalism and at the same time excusing sin..

I say "Disagree" to this..I don't believe that the devil will tell you not to sin. Your flesh, trying to 'earn' a high rank in heaven will become obsessed with perfection..and the flesh is just as much the enemy as the devil and the 'world'..even though it looks so friendly in the mirror! :)

Agreed!! More of because I love Martin Luther than the actual , but the principle is good, just not the best choice of words.

I must disagree, I believe that we travel in the direction of what we are looking at... in other words, we dont need to look or listen to the Devil. We dont need to focus on the deceptions of Satan to figure out what we should do. We should simply look at the Truth of Gods word for our source of wisdom. ML needed to focus on God and his Holiness and take a little bit of the focus off of Satan.

agree in spirit. his word choice is horrible.

everyone in my church drinks. everyone. if i went out with a group of people from my church, i'd be the only one ordering non-alcohol, SO I ought to drink, as to not become a stumbling block to their faith.

Agree and disagree. I think Luther had some poor word choice when he said: Sometimes we must drink more, sport, recreate ourselves, and even SIN A LITTLE to spite the devil." Sinning is never a good thing in the eyes of the Lord. The way Martin Luther is talking, he sounds as if he believes drinking is a sin (which in those days people probably thought it was). But when he says to say to the devil "I will drink, and right freely, just because you tell me not to," he's right, though the tone might not be there. As Christians we are FREE to do whatever unless God has told us not to it or if it makes us stumble in our walk with him.

Alcohol is my frog..as Gary Lamb puts it..therefore I would have to disagree. Only the devil would have me believe it is the devil telling me NOT to drink.

The bible does not forbid us from drinking at all. However, within that freedom to drink there are some things to consider. Will it make us stumble and sin, i.e. you can't have just one or two, or you will do other sins? Will it make someone we are around struggle, say you were hanging out with a friend who was a recovering alcoholic? Is it legal, as in are you of legal age to drink? I do believe that our consciences can get troubled with trifles, as Luther put it, causing us to become legalists and not even realize it. I know this is something that I tend to struggle, with harrassment of my conscience. So I would say I lean more in agreement with Luther.

the devil knoes you will do the opposite because we are rebelous ppl its in our nature to do the opposite but it dosnt mean we should. All christianly ppl should repent and in this case do wat the devil is saying which is not drink. The devil is a guy who is a master at minipulating ppl into dewin his thing.
